Marin Marais is one of the most important figures of the French baroque. At once a virtuoso on the viola da gamba, a composer and a teacher, Marais left behind a varied body of work that displays strikingly abundant inspiration. Five Books of viol music punctuated his life. Published between 1686 and 1725, these collections for solo and accompanied viol not only offer a remarkable synthesis of the practices of the time; they also bear witness to the development of the instrument. Marais’s frequently intimate music, a far cry from courtly splendors, calls up an imaginary world of light and shadow.

Atsushi Sakai has launched a series of recordings of this unique collection of pieces. This album, the first, is devoted to Book I, a transitional work that confirms the refinement of the “style françois”. Gambist Marion Martineau and harpsichordist Christophe Rousset join Atsushi Sakai on this adventure, recreating the trio that stood out so brilliantly in their Forqueray and Couperin albums.

Marin Marais demeure l’une des figures les plus importantes du baroque français. À la fois virtuose de la viole, pédagogue et compositeur, il laisse derrière lui une œuvre variée, et qui fait montre d’une fécondité d’inspiration saisissante. Cinq livres de pièces pour viole jalonnent sa vie : publiés entre 1686 et 1725, ces recueils destinés à la viole seule ou accompagnée constituent à la fois une remarquable synthèse des usages de l’époque autant qu’ils témoignent de l’essor de l’instrument. Sa musique, souvent intimiste, exerce des séductions bien éloignées des fastes de la Cour, appelant tout un imaginaire en clair-obscur.

Atsushi Sakai consacre une série discographique à cet ensemble singulier, dont le présent enregistrement constitue un premier volet articulé autour du Premier livre, ouvrage de transition qui consacre le raffinement du style français. Atsushi Sakai s’entoure pour cette aventure de la violiste Marion Martineau et du claveciniste Christophe Rousset, trio déjà brillamment distingué dans ses parutions consacrées à Forqueray et Couperin.
